Chaparral, with ten penalties and three turnovers, started slow and played in sloppy fashion for most of the night. Chaparral started its first offensive possession with an interception on its first play. North Canyon struck quickly when senior wide receiver Ryan Trujillo got behind the Firebird defense and caught a pass from junior Dominic Portocarrero for a 48-yard touchdown that gave the Rattlers a 7-0 lead with 10:08 left to play in the first quarter. The Rattlers capitalized on another Firebird interception when Portocarrero scored from one yard out with 6:13 remaining in the first. After a failed PAT the Rattlers held a 13-0 lead. The Firebirds struck back early in the second quarter when senior Dwayne Garrett ran 35 yards for a touchdown. After a successful PAT the score was 13-7. The Firebirds got the ball back and Garrett rushed 20 yards for his second touchdown and after a successful PAT the score was 14-13 Chaparral with 7:39 remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Connor Brewer ended a quick 55 second scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior Danny Trittler with 13 seconds remaining in the half. After a successful PAT the Firebirds took a 21-13 lead into the the half. The Rattler defense tighted up in in the second half. The Firebirds only managed to score three additional points, which came when senior Ben Damari kicked a 40-yard field goal with 6:38 in the third to make it a 24-13 lead. The Rattlers passing attack struck again with 3:31 seconds to go in the third when Portocarrero found Trujillo for his second touchdown, this time for a 68-yard touchdown. After a failed two-point conversion the score was 24-19. A late Chaparral fumbled gave the Rattlers one last shot with two minutes left to play but the Firebird defense held and the game ended 24-19 in favor of Chaparral. Chaparral travels to Desert Mountain next week. North Canyon falls to 3-6 and will host St. Mary's next week.
