October 10, 2013The 1st Annual Phoenix College Invitational was held Sunday October 6 at Phoenix College. Approximately 200 players from the state of Arizona participated. Here is a report on the event (based on performance in this event).
6'9" C/PF Isaac Allen of Mesa HS 2014 (Rockets)
Allen is a long and athletic postman who can run the floor. He does show some ability to shoot from the perimeter and stretch the defense. He has a fair post-up game and needs to polish it up. He is a good shot blocker and a capable rebounder on the defensive end. He needs to play with more consistent effort and intensity. Allen is a mid major prospect with potential that could be considered at a higher level if the effort is there.
6'7" PF/C Alex Birketoft of Planet Athletic Academy 2014
Birketoft was one of the stand-out performers in this event who caught scouts' attention. He's a strong and aggressive combo postman who is very hard-working and competitive. He can bounce it, passes it fairly well and can pull up effectively in the half court. He moves well without the ball which makes him even more difficult to defend for a post player. He can shoot it from the perimeter and is a solid post-up player with a nice jump hook. He's also a solid rebounder. Birketoft (who is from Denmark) is a probable mid major prospect.
6'7" SF/PF Zylan Cheatham of South Mountain HS 2014 (Celtics)
Cheatham was arguably the best player at this event, displaying his talents in an impressive fashion. He is an ultra-athletic combo forward who can really run and jump. He's a solid ball handler who can go coast to coast, often finishing with a thunderous dunk. He's an excellent passer who makes numerous pin-point passes in a half court setting. He's a big-time driver who is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenders. He's a high-level rebounder who does pursue the ball and has the length and lateral quickness to come up with it. His one key question mark is his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter consistently. This is something he must demonstrate. Cheatham lies somewhere between upper mid major and bottom level high major. With a proven outside shot, he is a high major prospect.
6'5" PF Brandon Clark of Desert Vista HS 2015
Clark was one of the pleasant surprises of the event. He is an active and athletic four man who makes things happen. He's a good passer, has a nice one-bounce drive and a fairly good turnaround shot on the block. He's also a solid rebounder who does pursue the ball. Clark is an upper level low major prospect who does have some upside.
5'11" PG Rashad Isaac of Planet Athletic Academy 2014
Isaac is an athletic point guard who is effective in transition. He can handle and pass it and does a nice job pushing the break. He's a real good driver with a nice first step. While successful without it, his ability to shoot from the perimeter is an unknown at this point. Isaac is a low major prospect.
5'11" PG/SG Delano Jones of Tempe HS 2015 (Team Zona)
Jones is an athletic combo guard with a real nice burst of speed. He's a good ball handler who pushes the break well and pulls up very nicely in the half court. He shoots it ok with 3 range, has a real nice floater shot and is an effective penetrator. He does need some bulk/strength to prepare for the next level. Jones looks to be an upper level low major prospect.
6'3" SF Dakota Kordsiemon of Catalina Foothills HS 2015 (Celtics)
Kordsiemon is a strong-bodied wing who is very productive. He is a capable handler who can get to the basket on the drive and also can pull up in the half court. He shoots it ok with 3 point range and is a solid rebounder. Kordsiemon is a low major prospect who also brings an element of toughness to the table.
6'0" PG Buoy Maker of Peoria HS 2014 (Thunder)
Maker is an athletic point guard who makes scoring plays in transition and in the half court. He handles it well and pulls up nicely-both on the break and in the half court. He shoots it ok, is a good driver with a nice first step and has an effective pull up floater. He is also a capable defender. Maker is a probable low major prospect.
5'10" PG Tarion May of Ceaser Chavez HS 2015 (Team Zona)
May is a nice-looking prospect who brings a lot to the table. He's an athletic one man who can handle it and is a real good passer. He makes plays in transition for himself and others consistently. He has a fairly good first step on the drive and has a nice floater shot. He does have a tendency to get airborn unnecessarily at times. He works hard on defense and is a capable rebounder from the guard position. May is a definite Division I prospect- it's just a question of how high he will go (he is receiving high major looks).
6'1" PG Marco Morales of Chandler HS 2014 (Arizona All Stars)
Morales is an athletic point guard with nice all-around skills. He handles the ball well and is a real good passer who is a solid decision-maker in transition. He can pull up in the half court, is a capable driver with an ok first step, has a nice hesitation move and is an effective penetrator. Importantly, he knows how to run a team. He's a little thin and does need some bulk/strength. Morales is worth low major consideration.
7'1" C Kingsley Okoroh of Westwind Prep Academy 2014
Okoroh is a big-bodied five man. He's an average athlete who runs the floor ok and probably could use a little conditioning. He is a capable post-up player who has a drop step move and a jump hook on the block. He can rebound the ball in his box (but does not have the mobility to go outside his box) and can block shots ok. Okoroh (who is from England) is a mid major prospect (who could get higher looks) and is relatively hard to guard because of his enormous size.
6'5" SF/PF Rees Plummer of Deer Valley HS 2015 (AZ Driven)
Plummer is a combo forward who runs fairly well. He is a versatile scorer who shoots it ok with 3-point range, can get to the basket on the drive, can post up a little and he moves fairly well without the ball. He's also a solid rebounder and a decent defender. Plummer is worth low major consideration.
6'5" PF/SF Pablo Rivas of Chavez HS 2014 (Rockets)
Rivas is a combo forward who is an impressive physical specimen with nice athleticism, long arms and good hands. He's a decent ball handler who can pull up in the half court. He has a solid one-bounce drive to the hoop. His perimeter shot is fair but does have a funny rotation and needs some refinement. He has a competent turnaround shot on the block and is a solid rebounder. Rivas' offensive skills do need some refinement but he is likely a low major prospect.
6'0" PG Tyson Smith of Planet Athlete Academy 2014
Smith is an athletic one man with nice quickness. He handles it well and is a good passer. He's a very effective scorer who is a good driver with a nice first step (who can break down defenders) and is an ok shooter with 3 range. He's a little too fancy at times. He has quick hands defensively and can defend on the ball. Smith is a nice low major prospect.
6'4" PG Collin Weaver of Westwind Prep Academy 2014
Weaver is a one man who tries to make something happen with the ball in his hands on every possession. He is a good handler and passer who pushes the break pretty hard and has good court vision. He can pull up in the half court and is usually able to get in the lane and make plays. Weaver is likely a low major prospect.
6'6" PF Terry Winn of Westwind Prep Academy 2014
Winn is a fairly athletic four man who can run. He's a decent ball handler with an improving mid-range shot and can get to the basket on a short drive. He is a solid rebounder who can go get the ball. He does have a tendency to take plays off at times. Winn is somewhere in the low to mid major range.
