On a night devoted to breast cancer awareness, Tempe (Ariz.) Marcos de Niza donned special pink home jerseys and proceeded to rout Gilbert (Ariz.) Perry 42-0. Marcos de Niza, now 7-0, showed once again that it is one of the contenders in 5A2. The Padres were led by seniors Ramon Abreu and Justin Rodriguez, who combined for five of the team's six touchdowns. Marcos de Niza took control early on when junior Dominic Sotelo scored from seven yards out to give the Padres a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The Padres made the score 14-0 after an Abreu 2-yard touchdown run and successful PAT. Perry had a terrible start, as it had negative total yards from scrimmage and failed to achieve a first down after the first quarter. The Padres struck quickly in the second when Abreu scored again, this time on 1-yard touchdown pass from senior Zach Schira. After the PAT the Padres led 21-0. Perry finally started to move the ball in the second quarter only to have Abreu make a spectacular one-handed interception to end its drive. Rodriguez then stuck when he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Schira and after the PAT the Padres led 28-0. Perry did get into scoring position late in the second quarter only to have Marcos de Niza force another turnover when sophomore Adam Pavlenko intercepted a pass on the goal line preserving the Padres 28-0 lead into the half. Abreu scored his third touchdown on the night and twelfth of the season when he ran 48 yards to paydirt. After the PAT the Padres had a 35-0 lead with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. Rodriguez capped the evening for the Padres with a 3-yard touchdown reception from Schira with 4:29 left to go in the third. The touchdown was Rodriguez's tenth of the season. Marcos de Niza covert the PAT to reach the game's final score, 42-0. Both teams are off next week. In two weeks Marcos de Niza, now 7-0, hosts Casa Grande, while Perry, which falls to 4-3, will host Skyline.
