Led by a stellar 2nd Half defensive performance, the ALA Queen Creek Patriots defeated the Mesquite Wildcats 20-14 in a 4A Showdown on Friday night. The Patriots' defense pitched a second half shutout, picking off four Mesquite passes throughout the night. The Patriots move to 5-1 on the year with last night's victory.
Brandon Wettstein made big plays on both sides of the ball for the Patriots on Friday night. On offense, the Senior caught seven passes for 75 yards and hauled in a 2nd quarter touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, Wettstein dropped back in pass coverage and picked off a reverse pass trick play late in the fourth quarter that halted any real shot of Mesquite coming back to win this football game.
After the first defensive series of the game, Meza was given the duties of locking down Mesquite's #1 target on offense, Marshall commit Andrew Morris. What followed was a phenomenal performance from the junior defensive back. Meza gave up only one reception the rest of the game and also picked off a pair of passes in the win. Meza showed athleticism and soft hands going up to high-point each interception in the Patriots secondary.
Blake Corner continued his impressive Senior season by bouncing off and running through the ALA Queen Creek defense all night. Corner's yards after contact must be through the roof this season as the Senior 225-pound running back showed great toughness keeping his shoulder square and keeping his feet moving to maximize his yards gained. Corner also shined on defense, coming in on spurts to make big plays near the line of scrimmage.
Sire Lavallee made two of the biggest plays for this Mesquite defense on Friday night. The junior DB showed off ballhawking abilities picking off two first half passes, none bigger than the interception right on the goal line to keep ALA QC from scoring right before the half ended. Lavallee did a great job of reading the QB's eyes and stepping in front of a front-side slant route to pick off the 2nd Q pass.
This dude's a gamer!! Jensen played both ways the entire game at running back and inside linebacker for the Patriots. Offensively, Jensen averaged 6.3 yards per carry racking up 96 all-purpose yards and a touchdown on the night. On defense, the junior LB was all over the field making plays. He finished the night with 9 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks. Jensen's tough as nails in the backfield and he plays the same way at linebacker. Fun player to watch.
