UPDATED: 7/22/20

Colleges across the nation continue to take notice of the prep talent in Arizona each season. More than 350 players from the Class of 2020 have signed with schools to advance their football careers, and receive an education.

Of course, everything in sports has been ground to a halt due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Recruiting is not immune to that. The NCAA has extended its dead period for in-person recruiting through at least August 31. Schools are not permitted to host any official or unofficial on-campus visits during that time. Coaches are allowed to contact prospective student-athletes through phone calls, text messages, and in writing (but not in person). That is currently in effect for every sport in Division I and Division II.

Daniel Fulton received an offer from Carthage College last Thursday. The linebacker at Chandler had 23 tackles and an interception last season. Fulton (5-11, 210) returned that pick 46 yards in a victory over Brophy last October. He should have no trouble staying grounded after last year's undefeated season. Inspiration should come from getting more playing time as a senior and the fact that he has a 4.0 GPA. Fulton was recently selected for membership to the National Society of High School Scholars. Carthage brings a lot of players back from a team that went 4-6 last season. On the defensive line, the Red Men were starting three freshmen by year's end. Carthage is a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (Div. III). The school is located in Kenosha, Wisconsin and is on Lake Michigan. Fulton tacked on an offer from Albright College, a Division III school in Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Tage Rigby was braving the heat and running the pro agility test (5-10-5). In his tweet, he said "Working every day to stay ready.". Last Friday, Rigby collected his first Division I offer from the University of San Diego. The 6-2, 220-pound running back at Centennial had to sit the first five games of his junior year after transferring from Liberty. In limited duty (26 carries), Rigby averaged a whopping 11 yards per attempt and scored three touchdowns, one against Hamilton in the Open quarterfinals. He also played some linebacker and had six tackles in a shutout of Sunrise Mountain. San Diego captured its sixth straight Pioneer Football League (FCS) title and made the playoffs for the fifth time in that span. The College Football America Yearbook has ranked the Toreros No. 25 this preseason. USD is coming off an undefeated record in league play and a 9-3 overall mark. San Diego returns 15 starters this fall.

Williams Field wide receiver Myles Taylor now has the military triple crown of offers as he earned one from Army last Saturday. The 6-1, 180-pounder caught 60 passes for 1,342 yards and 16 touchdowns as the Black Hawks won the 5A Conference title game. Taylor's GPA is sure to see a boost as he finished the spring semester with straight A's. He now has eight offers, including Navy and Air Force. Army welcomed a new class of 77 this week to its squad. Among the new '24 recruits are six players that recently graduated high school in Arizona. The Black Knights, who finished 5-8 last year, may have some turmoil with their schedule being that they're independents. However, the plan for now is to at least have the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia this December.

One of the competitors at the Minot State prospect camp last Saturday in North Dakota was Jared Williams. The 5-11, 205-pound Chaparral running back was moving in the 40 as he was laser timed at 4.58. Williams came away with an offer from the Beavers by the end of the day. Last season, he rushed for 1,034 yards and 21 touchdowns as the Firebirds made the Open Division playoffs. Williams is quite familiar with the MSU program as his older brother, Steve (a Mountain Pointe alum), signed with the Beavers last February. Minot State is planning to begin a 10-game slate on Sept. 10 at home against Sioux Falls. All of the Beavers' games this year will come against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (Div. II) competition. MSU finished 3-8 last season.

Another camp attendee that gained an offer from Minot State was Zeth Nastal. The 6-foot, 215-pound Mesa linebacker performed well, met the Beaver coaching staff, and saw both the campus and the town. Nastal led the Jackrabbits in tackles last season with 82 and also had four sacks. Mesa went 6-4 last year to extend its mark as the winningest program in state history. MHS, which was founded in 1898, has an all-time record of 672-360-37.

A pair of Brophy Broncos got offers from Bowdoin College last Sunday, a school with an acceptance rate of just 14 percent. Earning them were Jackson Camarata and William Bastman. Camarata is a 5-10, 145-pound receiver. He's also a hurdler that can run a 4.54 40-yard dash. Camarata also pulled in an offer from Oberlin (Ohio) on Wednesday. Bastman is a 6-foot, 185-pound defensive end. He's a track athlete as well and competes in the decathlon. Both Camarata and Bastman have GPAs north of 4.25. Bowdoin announced last month that it will not be participating in fall or winter sports in the first semester. They are hopeful that there will be an opportunity for fall athletes after January 1. The Polar Bears finished 0-9 last season, with all of its games coming in New England Small College Athletic Conference play (Div. III). Bowdoin is located in Brunswick, Maine and is part of the metropolitan Portland area.

Located just 20 miles northwest of Bowdoin is Bates College. Like Bowdoin, it is also selective and requires incoming students to be near the top of their class and have a transcript that is filled with A's. Bates extended an offer on Monday to Kellen Gibson. The 6-2, 220-pound linebacker at Arizona College Prep fills up the report card with a 4.8 GPA. Gibson also got it done on the field as he led the Knights with 129 tackles and added four sacks. He recently took a trip to the Northwest and visited Carroll College and Montana Tech. Following up on Bowdoin's announcement in June, the NESCAC canceled fall athletic competition on July 10. According to the latest NCAA information, Division III athletes would not be charged with participation if their team competes in fewer than 50 percent of the scheduled games. Bates finished 2-7 last season. The first of those two victories for the Bobcats came in a rout of Bowdoin (30-5) in the school's first night home game. The win ended a 17-game losing streak for Bates.

Deer Valley wide receiver Matthew Weed obtained another option for his college future as he earned an offer from Puget Sound on Monday. Weed (5-8, 155) was able to return to the practice field with his Skyhawk teammates last Friday. He carries a GPA of 3.88 and is looking to make an impact in his senior year as DVHS graduated its top two receivers from a year ago. Puget Sound is located in Tacoma, Washington, but recruits from several states. The Loggers had signees from seven states last spring (including Arizona). Puget Sound finished 6-4 last season, including a perfect 6-0 mark at home in Baker Stadium. The school plays in the Northwest Conference in Division III.

Concordia College in Minnesota offered a pair of East Valley players this week. Joel Diaz and Jackson Condie each picked up offers from the Cobbers. Diaz is a 6-1, 180-pound safety at Arizona College Prep. He had 92 tackles and intercepted three passes for the Knights. Diaz was big on special teams averaging 26 yards per punt return. He also added on an offer from Johns Hopkins, one of the top universities in the world. Condie is a 6-4, 270-pound offensive lineman at Desert Ridge. Most of his highlights as a junior came in JV games, so he's ready to make a varsity impact. The Jaguars averaged 31.5 points per game last season with most of their 369 yards each week coming through the air. In addition to the measurables, Condie totes a 3.8 GPA in the classroom. Concordia had a big recruiting class last spring with 55 new players joining the Cobbers. Arizona was well represented with six players. Concordia won its last three games a year ago to even up the record at 5-5. Goldwater alum Sam Michel finished his college career with six tackles in a 54-21 victory over Carleton. The linebacker had 163 tackles and played in 33 games for the Cobbers over his four years. Concordia, located in Moorhead, plays in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (Div. III).

One of the top long snappers in the nation landed a Division I scholarship offer as Hank Pepper pocketed one from San Diego State. The 6-2, 205-pounder at Chandler High had a Top 10 showing at the Kohl's National Scholarship Camp last weekend. Kohl's Snapping currently ranks Pepper at No. 2 in the nation. In addition to long snapping, he plays linebacker for the Wolves and had 44 tackles plus an interception last season. Pepper was timed with an impressive 4.7 in the 40. San Diego State ranked second in the FBS in scoring defense (12.7) and rushing (75.4) during a 10-3 season. The Aztecs have posted double-digit win totals in four of the past five years. In the preseason media poll, SDSU was picked to win the West Division of the Mountain West and were awarded first-place votes by 19 of the 21 voters.

Here's the rest of the offers since last Thursday:

Highland safety Ammon Allen received an offer from Idaho.
Chaparral offensive tackle Mason Osborn received an offer from Morgan State (Md.).
Desert Edge offensive guard Jayden Ahboah received an offer from Morgan State.
Mountain Ridge cornerback Albin Arulanandu received an offer from Washington & Lee (Va.).
Agua Fria defensive tackle AJ Auau received an offer from Ohio Northern.
Walden Grove linebacker Sebastian Adamski received an offer from Southwestern (Tex.).
Chandler offensive tackle Cess Ibarra received an offer from Carthage (Wisc.).
Cibola running back John Beltran received his first offer from Albright (Pa.).
Canyon del Oro safety Ethan Seppala received an offer from Wisconsin-River Falls.
Campo Verde linebacker Mark Liano received an offer from Oberlin (Ohio).

This list shows four-year college offers received by seniors throughout the state. It's not limited to just 6A and 5A. It will be constantly updated as we approach the Early Signing Period from December 16-18. Those are the first days that high school seniors can sign a letter of intent to agree to attend an institution.

Verbal commitments are shown in bold.

Canyon del Oro running back Rocker commits to Arizona Wildcats

UPDATED: 7/21/20

We started the day last Thursday with two Pac-12 schools that didn't have an in-state commitment. Both were in State 48.

Later in the day, though, that changed as Stevie Rocker announced his commitment to stay in Tucson and become an Arizona Wildcat.

In addition to the comfort level of remaining in Southern Arizona and providing the opportunity for his friends and family to see him play, there were other factors for choosing the U of A.

"The coaching staff," Rocker said in a text message. "They have always treated me as family and I fell in love with the atmosphere."

The 6-foot, 185-pound running back at Canyon del Oro rushed for 1,543 yards and 13 touchdowns (plus three receiving) for the Dorados over the past two seasons. Rocker was limited last year due to a leg fracture. He played in just six games after busting through the 1,000-yard mark as a sophomore. When healthy, he is considered the best back in Southern Arizona for the 2020 season.

Rocker selected Arizona over offers from BYU, Cal, and Nevada. He was offered by the Wildcats in June of 2019.

The last running back to go from CDO to Arizona laid quite a legacy as Ka'Deem Carey was an All-American for the 'Cats in 2012 and 2013. Carey currently plays for Calgary in the CFL.

Until Rocker's announcement, a total of nine seniors from Arizona had committed to five different schools in the Pac-12. The Wildcats now join Cal, Oregon, UCLA, Utah, and Washington State as teams that have Arizona commitments for the '21 class.

While non-conference play has been shelved for the 2020 season, Arizona has lined up a couple future opponents. Way in to the future. The Wildcats will face Wyoming in a home-and-home series in '30 and '33. Arizona has also added a game in Tucson against Weber State in '25. The non-conference games canceled for UA this year were against Hawaii, Portland State, and Texas Tech. In 2019, Arizona went 2-1 against non-Pac-12 teams and 4-8 overall.

The Big Sky Conference has its first Arizona commitment in the '21 class as Andrew Patterson announced he'll be heading to Montana State.

Patterson is a 5-10, 165-pounder who was a big-play receiver for Desert Edge. He caught 53 passes for 1,165 yards and 11 touchdowns. He received his offer from the Bobcats in March.

"It was really the coaches, the players, and the state that I fell in love with," Patterson said in a text message. "The atmosphere and the vibes just felt like a second home as soon as I got there."

Patterson selected MSU over 14 other schools, including five from the Big Sky plus New Mexico and New Mexico State.

He also played some defense in the Scorpions' run to the 4A Conference finals. Patterson intercepted passes against Casa Grande and Mesquite during the playoffs. MSU is recruiting him as a wide receiver.

Patterson is the third known commitment for the Bobcats for the '21 class. The recruiting coordinator for Montana State is Jimmy Beal, who is quite familiar with Arizona as he was an assistant coach at NAU for nine seasons. Beal will be the running backs coach for the Bobcats, where he played two seasons of college football.

Montana State is coming off its most successful season in decades. The Bobcats went 11-4 and played in the FCS semifinals. For the 2020 season, Northern Arizona doesn't appear on MSU's schedule, but of course the University of Montana does. That game, known as the Brawl of the Wild, is scheduled for Nov. 21 on the road in Missoula. Last season, MSU rushed for 382 yards to blow past the Grizzlies, 48-14. An over-capacity crowd of 19,827 reveled in the big victory last November.

That wasn't all for Montana State this week, though. The news of Patterson was followed up 24 hours later with a bigtime defensive commit as Aaron Gerle announced he's heading to the 'Cats as well.

Gerle, a 6-2, 255-pound defensive tackle at Greenway, was able to take a trip up to Bozeman in June. While he couldn't get an in-depth talk with the football staff (NCAA dead period rules), he was able to take in the city that certainly has a college-town feel as 17,000 of the town's population (50,000) attend MSU.

"I felt it right off the plane looking at the city, the staff, and especially (defensive line) Coach (Byron) Hout," Gerle said in a text message. "Beautiful campus, beautiful city, and program only getting bigger."

Last season, Gerle led the Demons in tackles (82), sacks (13), and tackles for a loss (25). He was named the 4A Skyline Region Player of the Year.

It was after a conversation with Hout that Gerle received his offer from Montana State in April. He selected the Bobcats over 12 other offers, including three from the Big Sky (Idaho, Northern Arizona, and Southern Utah).
