Colleges across the nation continue to take notice of the prep talent in Arizona each season. More than 430 players from the Class of 2024 have signed with schools to advance their football careers, and receive an education.

Game times listed are in Arizona time.

June 24th marked the beginning of a Dead Period. During this time, it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts on or off of college campuses. There is also a break from official and unofficial visits, which are not allowed. This period will last through July 24.

Last month, Brody Johnson competed at Montana State in a specialist camp. While there, the Liberty long snapper ended up winning the snapping competition. Fast forward five weeks later, and Johnson has received an offer from MSU. The 6-2, 210-pounder isn't limited to special teams. Johnson also played some linebacker for the Open Division champions and made 17 tackles along with a fumble recovery. He carries a stellar 4.50 GPA in the classroom. Montana State just broke ground this week on an indoor athletic facility. It will serve as a training and competition site for track and field as well as a practice facility for the football team, which would be beneficial on cold and snowy November days. The Bobcats went 8-4 last season and made the FCS playoffs. MSU will get a jump start on much of the country with a road game on Aug. 24 at New Mexico. FS1 will have the national broadcast at 1 p.m. MSU plays in the Big Sky Conference, but will miss Northern Arizona this year.

Earning a new offer last Friday was Tre'Shawn Shorty. The Williams Field cornerback secured it from Idaho State. Shorty, who is 5-10 and 165 pounds, made the move from JV to varsity midway through his sophomore year. Last season, in his first full year as a starter, Shorty had a breakthrough campaign with 68 tackles and three blocked kicks. He received the offer from ISU following a camp and a visit to the Pocatello campus. Shorty ran track last spring competing in the 200 and 400 meters. He made the state meet as part of the 4x400 relay team. Idaho State has added Dan Hawkins to be the Bengals' Director of Player and Staff Development. Hawkins has coached at Willamette (Ore.), Boise State, and UC Davis. ISU (3-8 in 2023) begins this season with a nationally-televised game at Oregon State on Aug. 31. The CW will have the game at 4:30 p.m. from Corvallis. Idaho State plays in the Big Sky Conference (FCS) and will play a game in Flagstaff against Northern Arizona on Oct. 19. On Sept. 28, the Bengals will host Montana State for a game in which the school will celebrate their Hometown Heroes (first responders, military members, and medical professionals).

Before heading up to Prescott for camp with his Pinnacle High teammates, quarterback Wyatt Horton finalized his college recruitment.

The 6-foot, 175-pound captain receiver committed to Idaho State University. Horton held a total of nine Division I offers with six of those schools located in the West.

Horton was offered by the Bengals in early May after a conversation with quarterbacks coach Kolney Cassel.

"The people," Horton mentioned as the main reason he selected ISU. "Incredible staff and an incredible team that is clearly on the up and improving daily. It's a school I think can develop me really well and at the same time, I can come in and contribute to where I know the program can be."

He is heading into his third year as a starter for Pinnacle. As a sophomore, he led the Pioneers to the 6A Conference championship game. In two years on varsity, Horton has thrown for just over 5,000 yards and has 49 touchdown passes.

The Idaho State-Idaho rivalry will now have a new traveling trophy as the Potato State Trophy was unveiled over the weekend. The new hardware features a large wooden potato made out of North Idaho Douglas Fir and weighs 19 pounds. Small plaques on the front will be engraved with the score each year. It will be up for grabs on Nov. 23 when the Bengals host Idaho to close out the regular season. The plan is to "Stripe the Stadium" with each section alternating between Orange and Black.

Jason Samis played on both sides of the ball for Notre Dame Prep, making plays on defense as a linebacker and blocking for the Saints' running game as a fullback. Not every college employs a fullback and that played a role in schools that captured Samis' interest.

The 6-foot, 230-pounder competed in a camp last weekend at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Samis met up with Bulldogs' defensive lineman Duke Frye, who graduated from NDP in 2022. On Tuesday, he received an offer from Drake and he committed later that day.

"There have been a number of Notre Dame Prep players that have gone to Drake," Samis said in a text message. "In addition to that, it was extremely important to me to find a school that uses a true fullback and has the academic excellence that I am looking for. The facilities were amazing and I loved the funding the program has. I also loved the coaching staff, especially (Tight Ends & Fullback) Coach (Jack) Johnson, who played at Iowa."

Samis made 46 tackles and had four sacks last season. On offense, he had just 25 carries, but made the most of them as he averaged five yards per attempt. Samis is a National Honor Society student that totes a 4.10 GPA.

Drake won the Pioneer Football League (FCS) championship last season and made the playoffs. The Bulldogs finished 8-4 last year and will kick this one off with a Thursday night home game on Aug. 29 against Quincy (Ill.). It will be Drake's first Thursday nighter in three years.
