HAMILTON
Advertisement
Looking back at past Hamilton schedules, I cannot remember a time in which we had to face such high caliber opponents week after week in the non-conference portion of our season (@ Buena, @ Brophy, Centennial, Dobson, Red Mountain, and @ Mountain Pointe). After beating a quality football team in Buena on their home field last week, we were able to travel to Phoenix College to take on the 2005 State Champion Brophy Broncos on the Fox Sports Network "Nike Game of the Week."
Offensively we were pleased with the game plan we had in place against Brophy. We wanted to control the clock and keep our defense off the field as much as possible. Gerell Robinson and Justin Peters did an excellent job of making proper reads running the option and hitting open receivers. In fact, the two combined on a TD pass from 18 yards out late in the game. Both Nathan Jefferies and Covaughn Deboskie showed why they are two of the best running backs in the state. They were able to keep the chains and the clock moving throughout the game. In addition, the offensive line did an excellent job picking up blitzes and opening up holes for the backs to run through. TE Tim Fowler had a 50-yard reception to help set up Anthony Cascio's 21 yard field goal.
On the defensive side of the ball we attempted to put as much pressure as we could on Brophy's QB. Justin Artis, Michael Sylvestre, Wyn Henderson, and Ruben Rubio had excellent games up front. Linebackers Zack Moore, Elliot Harper, and Anthony Jones continued to put pressure on the quarterback and make sure tackles against their running backs. Safety Reuben Robinson intercepted a pass in the end zone to end one of Brophy's drives. Junior Justin Rosales did an excellent job making tackles all over the field. To top off the night, sophomore cornerback Devin Carrington intercepted a pass and took it into the end zone from 32 yards away to end the scoring for the Huskies. Eddie Cervantes, Matt Teresinski, and Ryan Milus also did well in coverage.
Playing these types of games will not only help us become more prepared for our Fiesta Region competition, it will help us when playoff time rolls around. We realize that we have several areas to improve on including eliminating penalties, turnovers, and our overall conditioning as a team. With a full week to prepare, we are looking forward to our match up against the defending 2006 5-A II Champions this Thursday night as a part of the COX 7 Game of the Week.
Final Score: Hamilton Huskies 29 Brophy Broncos 6

CONGRATS WOLVES - GREAT START
Well it's about time that the season has finally begun for us, and what a good start. Early in are game with Ironwood, everything that could go wrong for them did, our defense scored the first 9 points of the game. Now, that isn't a bad way to begin, in fact, they scored another TD before half time. If you didn't know the score was 50 - 7. We achieved 4 of 11 goals on offense, 6 of 9 on defense, and 2 of 5 on Spl. Teams; so even as good of a night as it was, we have areas to work on improving. Now, don't get me wrong, we WON, and we won big; most of our players received some playing time. All of this is good, but they say that you make the most progress of any week between week one and week two. So, we will labor on Labor Day. If we can make steady progress each week, by the time of Region, we should be a good football team.
We had several guys step up with solid performances: Lee Peyton on defense and Special Teams, Harold Bernard on defense, Tomas' Farfan as our kicker, Kyle Trella as our punter in his first varsity game, Payton LaCivita on offense, Archie Woulard on offense, Marc Anthony proved he is a hitter, and most definitely Dion Jordan. Dion faced double coverage all night, which is to be expected, but he was a 'force' on defense. When this season is said and done, he will have as much attention on defense as he is receiving on offense.
Overall, as a coaching staff, we are pleased with our effort; obviously, you can never be satisfied with 5 fumbles, 9 penalties for 90 yds., and the number of missed tackles. But the tackles that we did make - they were tackles.
We should have Steven Jackson back this week, we thought that he would be able to go against Ironwood, but he was still a little tender. He will be at full speed this week and that is good, but Jamil Hines showed that he has the quicks to step in and move the ball up the field. If we can do a better job of 'Total Ball Security' and play the whole play, who knows how good we will become?
I know this much, the next 9 weeks will fly by, and if we can stay healthy and focused, we can make ourselves a legitimate Playoff caliber team. Bring on the Mustang's, let's see if we can get on a bus drive 20 minutes and play Wolf Ball for all 48 minutes!
GO WOLVES

CIENEGA
Cienega High School Blog for 8/31's game
WOW! What a game! Cienega Bobcats and Scottsdale Chaparral Firebirds played out all that it was hyped up to be. Both teams battled for 48 minutes this Friday night. Chaparral came out victorious after a nail bitter in Vail Arizona this previous Friday night!
Cienega (1-1) and Chaparral (2-0) played their hearts out in one of the greatest games ever played at Cienega stadium. Chaparral has always been a tough and competitive opponent for us. We always look forward to playing challenging teams in order for our program to grow.
Cienega was lead by the arm and legs of Seth Mejias-Brenan who ran for 123 yards and completed 10 passes for 129 yards. Other top performers were #6 Billy Barazza who had a long reception (66 yards) for a TD late in the 3rd quarter. Cienega spread the ball around on offense with Victor Short and Billy Barazza getting the duties on the ground and Wes Knight, David Abeyta, Trent Simon, Billy Barazza, and Victor Short receiving all of Mejias-Brenan's 10 completions at QB.
Cienega's tough defense was again lead by Greg Taylor (14 tackles), Wes Knight (16 tackles, 1 QB sack) and the hard hitting David Abeyta (12 tackles).

FLORENCE
The last time I wrote an article for Arizona Varsity, I was praising our team's effort in a loss to the Wickenburg Wranglers. This last week in a loss to the Estrella Foothills Wolves, our team took a giant step backwards. Give credit to the Wolves and HC Mike Welch, they were able to capitalize on our mistakes and turn them into points. They ran a no huddle, Texas Tech style offense and were able to get the ball to their playmakers, #4 David Ford, and #5 Tony Klopfenstein.
Everything that could have went wrong for us in a football game, did. We fumbled handoffs, fumbled snaps, had bad snaps, dropped wide open passes, and the list goes on. With 6 turnovers in the first half and down by a 21-0 score, a lot of teams would have quit and packed it in. For the most part, we fought back and scored 3 td's in the 2nd half. Alfred Woods, a 4 year varsity player for us scored twice and QB Cash Clemans ran another TD in. We had another sure TD wiped away on a great play from David Ford, our WR got behind the coverage and Clemans hit the WR in stride, looking like we were about to score, CB Ford caught up and ripped the ball out at the 1 yard line and EF recovered in the endzone for a touchback. It was one of those games that you try and forget, but hopefully we can use this as a huge lesson that we can't wait until the 3rd quarter to get going.
Here are some random thoughts on the game and a look ahead to next week and the Payson Longhorns.
WR/DB Alfred Woods scored his first 2 varsity TD's, Alfred is a player that every coach wants to have on his team. He does all the dirty work, blocks well, runs great routes that open up other players, and doesn't complain at all. Our OL opened up some very good hole and had great pass protection all night.
In next week's opponent, the Payson Longhorns, we play another very big and physical team. Right now the entire 3A East is undefeated, and Payson led by HC Josh Anderson, is right in the mix to win the region and compete for a playoff spot. They are led by QB Ridge Halenar, and a stable of RB's that include: Nick Goodman, Brandon Alexander, and Nick Alexander. Their offensive and defensive lines are very big and physical, but can move also. That group includes, Bryan Burke, Matthias Wilson, and Scott Andrus to name a few. We will see how we are able to bounce back against a quality opponent this week.
