After spending the last two years at Phoenix College I find myself back coaching in high school. I enjoyed the last two years at PC working with Coach Gordon and Coach Carrillo. I learned plenty of basketball and had great experiences going to the NJCAA final four and winning the division 2. I am very appreciative to both coaches at PC and Phoenix College for the opportunity. Coach Gordon has been doing an awesome job there since his arrival.
Recently after taking over the Copper Canyon program, we had our first open gym. Missing numerous athletes from football we still managed to field some good basketball players. Here are some of the stand out players that could help us out this year: (no particular order)
Felix Guerrero will be one senior that will be counted on during this season. We will be looking for him for leadership during the grind of the season. He has some great upside to his game, particularly in the open floor. Look for him to make a big impact this season.
6-foot-6 senior Jourdain Wagner is long and lean. He should be a presence on the floor with nice shot blocking, rebounding and a nice offensive touch around the rim.
Toure Marshall is a 6-foot-4, long and athletic sophomore that fills the lane well and looks to attack the basket.
Justin Haynes is a 6-foot-5 physical sophomore that is still raw and needs to work on his post game.
Senior Julio Aguirre is a very physical 6-foot-2 and works the boards really well and hustles on the floor.
5-foot-10 senior Felix Guerrero is an aggressive and strong guard that also has good quickness.
Joe Wolfe is a lengthy 6-foot-2 senior that is an athletic small forward that finishes the break well.
Looking forward at the upcoming season, Copper Canyon will be playing in the GCC mini tournament Oct 29th and 30th. The Aztecs will be competing in the West Valley Region and will be looking forward to playing top teams Kellis, Peoria, and Agua Fria of the region. It should be exciting.
