5A SUPER TOP TEN
No. 1 Hamilton vs. No. 6 Red Mountain (Thursday)
The Hamilton Huskies return this season as the 5A State Champions once again. They lost many key players on the offensive side of the ball including QB Travis Dixon and WR Mekell Wesley but that won't hold this team back. They return many of the states top defensive players including defensive lineman Brian Dean and Dontay Moch, who combined had over 100 tackles and 18 sacks in 2004. The Huskies also return big linebacker Gerald Munns. Red Mountain has always had strong teams and this year is no exception. They also suffered huge loses on both sides of the ball with the graduation of Channing Trotter, Nick Miller and Greg Bird but they return one of the states best defensive prospects in Jon Hargis. On offense they also return QB Nick Orr who may be one of the fastest players on he team. Hamilton once again has reloaded in every way possible and their defensive will be a force to reckon with this year.
Pick: Hamilton 28-14
Hamilton 41-14
No. 2 Westwood vs. Mountain Pointe
Westwood if highly ranked this season because of the talent and the potential to have a huge year. QB Brice Wilkens is a three-year starter and a D-1 prospect who can play on both sides of the ball. They also return stud RB Jay Leal, who plays many different positions besides RB such as punting, kicking and playing DE. Another skilled player to watch for is Kiegan Thompson who will most likely be lining up at fullback. One of Wilkens' favorite targets should be WR Cylend Simmons. Westwood may have the fastest team in the state this year. Mountain Pointe's senior QB Brad Falk is going to be a great leader for Pride this season. Their big time player will be two-way starter and D1 prospect Travis Hardee who is a running back, linebacker and punter. Another player that should have a huge year is OL/LB Sam Nielsen. He recorded 122 tackles and 5 sacks last season. This is going to be a great game as big time D1 talent battle it out but Westwood has too many skilled players and its going to be hard to stop just one.
Pick: Westwood 34-21
Westwood 39-21
No. 3 Brophy vs. Desert Vista
Despite losing the states best running back last year in Markel Devorce, Brophy is more stacked then ever. At quarterback they return junior standout Conor Hearn and two of his biggest targets this season will be wide receivers Matt Smith and Mike Giannola. They will also have a strong running game with Rahnee Dennard at running back and Blake Behrens blocking on the line. At tight end and linebacker will be Texas returnee Cole Graybill, who is looking to make a name for himself in Arizona. Lets not forget about free safety Mike Callaghan who will be leading the secondary. Desert Vista returns a solid linebacker in Justin Sayas, who by the end of the season should be up there with the best. The Broncos have all the makings to dominate every team that comes their way and Desert Vista will be their first victim.
Pick: Brophy 42-13
Brophy 30-7
No. 4 Mountain Ridge vs. Sunnyside
Sunnyside makes the big move to 5A this year. It's hard to say how well they will do because many of last year's backups will be the starters this season. We haven't seen these backups play much but we saw glimpses of some that looked to have promising futures. QB Anthony Durate will not be returning to the team this year, this is a huge hit for Sunnyside and their QB spot is uncertain at this point. Running back Mike Smith is a player to look out for. He's a small back that is fast and quick on his feet. They also return one of southern Arizona's best offensive lineman in Jose Lopez. Mountain Ridge looks to return back to the 5A State Championship. Their biggest lost was on the offensive side of the ball with the graduation of QB Austin Martin. Their offensive should maintain solid with QB Chris Johnston stepping in. They also have two talented WR's in Josh Morrow and Tony Paul. This is going to be a hard fought game but Mountain Ridge's offense will be too much for the Blue Devils to handle.
Pick: Mountain Ridge 34-14
Mountain Ridge 24-20
No. 5 Mesa Mountain View vs. Centennial
The Mountain View Toros return 17 lineman this season on both sides of the ball some names to mention would be OL Jeff Hines, OL Jake Burke and DL Dan Huber. Two of the top players for the Toros will be Junior RB/DE Ridge Nielson and his twin brother Riley Nielson, who is competing for the starting QB spot and will play at FS. Centennial moves up to 5A this season and unfortunately their first game will be against a dominant team like Mt. View. Centennials offense should be productive despite losing many offensive key starters. They return the state's best running back in Tim House, but the question is with all the loses on the offensive line will he still be productive? My guess would be yes. Look for him to have a 2,000-yard rushing season. Some other Centennial players to look out for would be lineman Craig Gallegos and DB/WR Justin Garman. Last year the Toros lost in the playoffs to Mountain Ridge 29-26 and are looking redeem themselves. They aren't going to be taken down lightly by anyone this season. If they can stop the run then this game won't even be close.
Pick: Mountain View 41-17
Mountain View 35-13
No. 7 Maryvale vs. Desert Mountain
Pick: Maryvale 45-10
Maryvale 50-6
No. 8 North vs. Mesquite
Pick: North 41-13
North 15-11
No. 9 Salpointe vs. Cienega
Pick: Salpointe 38-21
Cienega 25-20
No. 10 Paradise Valley vs. Peoria
Pick: Paradise Valley 28-14
Paradise Valley 27-0
4A SUPER TOP TEN
No. 1 Cactus vs. No. 9 Mingus
The Cactus Cobras are ranked No. 1 in our 4A preseason poll and rightfully so. They return a talented group of players this season. The states top QB Jon Tobin returns to lead the offense. He is big physical QB at 6-4 210 who can throw the ball well. Tobin committed to Idaho back in June. They also return big running back Richard Morris 6-1 235 who is almost impossible to bring down when the ball is in his hands. Not only do they return great leadership and talent on offense but look out for their defense also. On the defensive line they have DE Anthony Freeman who last year had 49 tackles and 3 sacks. At the linebacker spot is Mike Schmitt who should have a huge year. Cactus seems to always have tough defenses and this year will be no exception. Last week Mingus played their first game against Sunnyslope where they went on to win 18-16. The biggest playmaker for Mingus is QB Jay Arthur, who is a duel threat running and throwing. In the backfield is running back Ryan Hauser, which will make for an amazing run game. With Mingus' defense looking solid the team should have a good year.
Pick: Cactus 31-17
Cactus 52-7
No. 2 Moon Valley vs. No. 3 Chaparral - 4A Game of the Week
Two titans are about to collide. Both these teams return many starters from last season. Chaparral went on to rout Coconino 72-20 last weekend. The Firebird offense has great balance running and throwing. QB Nick Neuenfeldt showed off his athleticism with having two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. In the backfield RB Spencer Rothery should get the bulk of the carries and WR Vince Coleman looks to be Neuenfeldt's favorite target thus far. On defense the juniors are making the biggest impact LB Rodney Shaw, DL Dan Spade and DL Randall Bymoen all put up good numbers. Moon Valley lost two of their biggest offensive weapons in QB Brian Wriston and athlete Chris McGaha, that doesn't even include WR Tsar Johnson and RB/LB Matt Hain. It is going to be very difficult to replace that much talent but fortunate for the Rockets they return their entire line on both sides of the ball and that is what will carry this team. A big time player to look out for will be their RB Laron Harrington, with that said they should get big numbers on the ground. Senior QB Cody Burns has big shoes to feel but seems to be up for the challenge. Moon Valley also returns last years sack leader in Isaiah Smart. This should be an exciting and hard fought game.
Pick: Chaparral 34-21
Chaparral 45-0 WOW!
No. 4 Sabino vs. Sahuaro (Next Week)
It's not secret that Sabino has one of the best backfields in the state. RB Glyndon Bolasky and FB Brooks Reed are going to be almost impossible to stop this season. It's not only the running game you will have to worry about with this team, look for the Sabercats to make some big plays through the air. Junior QB Justin Randall will be one of the best quarterbacks in Southern Arizona this year. He is very accurate, has great awareness and is hard to being down when he runs the ball. His main target will be WR Codi Harshman, who should put up some big numbers. Sahauro has many key plays on the both sides of the line returning such as OT Lonnie Brunson, OT Jerimial Korn and DE Chance Wright. Also look out for WR/K Mike Lachapelle and DB Darryl Sieker. There aren't many teams in Southern Arizona and maybe even the state that can beat Sabino. They are loaded in every position and have too many skilled players to stop. Sabino should have a huge season and should have no problem getting to the playoffs.
Pick: Sabino 45-13 (next week)
Last night: Sabino 63 - Springfield Oregon 7
No. 5 Saguaro vs. Canyon del Oro
Canyon del Oro has two impact players to watch out for this year. The offense will be lead by returning QB Ryan Lush and their defense will be lead by LB/RB Kade Creviston. They will also return a great RB/LB in Peter Romero. They lost a ton of starters from last season so they might a pretty rough year trying to fill in those gaps. Scottsdale Saguaro's biggest threat is RB/DB Tyler Porras. After a long summer of attending many camps he finally received a huge Pac-10 offer from Stanford. Handing the ball off to Porras and RB Adam Coe will be lefty QB Chad Kidder. TE Ronnie Luco has great size at 6-6 215 and incredible hands. There is no question that he will be getting his hands on the ball often. Considering the fact that CDO lost many of their keys players they still should do fairly well running the ball. I look for them to still have a decent season but going up against Saguaro will be too much.
Pick: Saguaro 35-10
Canyon del Oro 33-6
No. 6 Millennium vs. Pinnacle
Pick: Millennium 38-13
Millennium 42-26
No. 7 Greenway vs. Sunnyslope
Pick: Greenway 28-21
Greenway 40-8
No. 8 Flagstaff vs. Glendale
Pick: Flagstaff 31-14
Glendale 27-7
No. 10 Cholla vs. Catalina Foothills
Pick: Cholla 35-21
Catalina Foothills 28-27
