Impact Players
Corona Del Sol 2024 QB Connor Ackerley (5'10, 160)
The sophomore gun-slinger had a terrific showing on Friday, completing over 60% of his passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Ackerley was accurate throughout the night, especially in the red zone where both of his touchdown passes were thrown. Ackerley also showed great touch on a couple passes up the seam for 25+ yard gains. Ackerley finished with a QBR of 122.9 in the 45-23 victory.
Corona Del Sol 2023 RB Jonathan Kubat (5'8, 170)
Kubat was the player of the game for the Aztecs. The junior tailback rushed for a career high 227 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Kubat also added three receptions for 49 yards, proving to be a valuable option in the air game on 3rd and 4th downs to keep drives alive. This is a tough runner who does a great job of keeping his shoulders square, and running north and south.
Corona Del Sol 2022 ATH Jalen Walker (6'1, 220)
Walker made big plays on both sides of the ball for the Aztecs on Friday night. The 220-pound senior hit pay dirt twice on dive plays right up the A-gap for touchdowns in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. The senior linebacker also made one heck of a play in the fourth quarter when he broke up a would-be Westwood touchdown by drilling the receiver out-of-bounds right when the ball hit the WR's hands. Smart, heads up play from the Aztec middle linebacker.
Westwood 2022 QB Gavin Letourneau (6'2, 200)
When college coaches roll around in early December for the NCAA recruiting eval period, they need to stop at Westwood to see Letourneau. The senior gun-slinger possesses a nice, easy throwing motion and he's accurate on the run. Letourneau finished the night throwing for 216 yards and two touchdowns.
Westwood 2022 WR Korwyn Brantley-Ellis (5'10, 150)
Brantley-Ellis was Westwood's go-to target on Friday. The senior WR did a great job of finding soft spots in Corona's zone coverage, as well as gaining separation with speed out of his breaks in man-to-man coverage. Brantley-Ellis finished with a game-high of 12 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown on the night.
Westwood 2022 RB Ryan Willis (5'8, 165)
This is a TOUGH runner. Willis did a great job of keeping his legs moving through contact, maximizing his yards gained with each carry. Willis racked up 93 yards on the ground and hit pay dirt in the fourth quarter for a touchdown.
Who To Watch
Corona Del Sol 2024 CB Keyvon Thomas (6'0, 160)
Thomas has the ability to be a complete lock-down corner one day in the 6A. The young sophomore defensive back shined in both zone and man coverage on Friday, showing fluidity in his hips and solid footwork while turning and breaking on routes. Thomas tackled well in space and contested passes at their highest point. Thomas picked off the final play of the game right near the end zone to seal the Aztec victory. This is definitely a player college staffs need to keep on their watch list.
Quotable
"I think what makes us successful is how we come together as a group. We're all on the same page, we all know what plays we're running. All in all, we're always connected and we (as an OL unit) never not know what we're doing." - Corona Del Sol junior OL Jake Carbajal
