Trailing 17-14 at halftime, the Basha Bears' defense shut down the O'Connor offense in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Basha scored 28 unanswered points in the 2nd half, defeating the O'Connor Eagles 42-17, revenging a 6A playoff loss to the Eagles from last season.
Impact Players
Basha 2024 QB Demond Williams Jr (5-11, 165)
Williams was incredible in this game., The sophomore gun-slinger threw for three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown in the big 42-17 win. Williams showed accuracy in all of his throws, but it was the timing and quick release of his passes that impressed me the most about his performance. Williams was on the money with his deep passes, adding beautiful touch for his WRs to run under each ball. He threw strikes to his WRs on intermediate routes, hitting all of them between the numbers with tight spirals. Williams had clean pockets to step up and throw in all night, and he took advantage of that. Williams' speed has increased a lot as well, this was evident on his quarterback scrambles. This is a sophomore QB who plays like a Senior. He's the real deal.
Basha 2024 WR Bryson Dedmon (5-9, 155)
Bryson Dedmon introduced himself to the state of Arizona last night with his monster performance. Dedmon hauled in a 1st Quarter touchdown where he dusted the opposing DB on a deep-route, racing into the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown. Then on the first offensive play in the 2nd half for the Bears, the sophomore WR caught an over-the-shoulder pass near the opponents sideline, staying in-bounds and racing to the house for another 70+ yard touchdown. Major deep threat for this Bears' offense.
Basha 2023 DB Jeremiah Vessel (6-0, 185)
Vessel told me two weeks ago at Basha's media day that the state of Arizona wasn't ready for him. Vessel lived up to his statement as the junior defensive back was all over the field making plays in his first game ever in the desert. Vessel made the defensive play of the game for the Bears in the 2nd Quarter as he drilled a would-be scorer right before the end zone line, putting his helmet right on the football and causing a fumble. Later in the 3rd Q, Vessel undercut a deep crossing route and made a highlight reel interception, diving in front of the WR to pick off the pass.
O'Connor 2022 DB Brevin Czosnyka (6-3, 190)
Czosnyka did a little bit of everything for the Eagles in this game. The Senior NAU commit hauled in two receiving touchdowns in the first half, including a TD reception where he posterized an opposing DB right before time expired in the first half. Czosnyka was active on defense, making numerous tackles near or behind the line of scrimmage. Long, rangy player who excels in the box. Good football player right here!!
O'Connor 2023 LB Blake Ware (5-8, 190)
Blake Ware gets after it. The Junior outside-linebacker brought pressure numerous times on delayed blitz schemes through the A and B gaps. Ware also scooped up a Basha fumble early in the first quarter, racing down the field for a massive return that resulted in a scoring drive.
Who To Watch
Basha 2023 DL Tyson Simmons (6-3, 235)
After the game, I chased down Basha Head Coach Chris McDonald and yelled at him for never introducing me to Tyson Simmons. This young man is a monster. Large frame, built, tremendous strength, and can run! Simmons wreaked havoc last night, splitting double-teams and getting into the backfield consistently. Simmons was also inches away from blocking about three O'Connor punts last night as well. Looking forward to watching this young man get better every week.
Quotable
Basha 2024 ATH Miles Lockhart (5-11, 175)
"All of the (defensive backs), they push me every day to be the best player that I can be. If I'm not at my spot, I can lose my (starting) spot, it's a fight every day. I love it. These (players) are great and I love playing with them." - Basha 2024 DB Miles Lockhart on playing with one of the top secondaries in the state.
Lockhart balled out on both sides of the football in Basha's 42-17 victory. The sophomore rushed for two touchdowns and showed off his ballhawking abilities locking down WRs on the defensive side of the ball.
