This past Friday I traveled up north to one of my favorite places to watch the Friday Night Lights - Anthem, AZ. Led by a five touchdown performance from junior running back Sinjin Schmitt, the Boulder Creek Jaguars rolled to a 56-42 victory over the Higley Knights to pick up their first win of the season.
Impact Players
Boulder Creek 2023 RB Sinjin Schmitt (6-3, 215)
Schmitt was the player of the game on Friday night. The 6'3 215-pound junior running back racked up 179 yards on the ground and rushed for five touchdowns in the Jag's win. Schmitt showed a great combination of speed and power, bulldozing over would-be tacklers on a number of carries. The junior tailback averaged 10.5 yards per carry as he gashed through the Knights' defense all night long. This is definitely a player college coaches need to add to their radar.
Boulder Creek 2024 QB Rowan Mckenzie (6-2, 170)
Mckenzie shined on Friday night. The sophomore gun-slinger accumulated 224 yards of total offense (167 yards passing, 57 on the ground) and also threw for a pair of touchdowns. Mckenzie left me impressed with the way he was able to elude defenders in the pocket, extending plays with his legs and still hitting his WRs with accuracy even on the run. Mckenzie is probably the fastest player on this Jags team as well. Ton of talent with this young sophomore dual-threat QB.
Boulder Creek 2022 TE Jack McFarland (6-1, 225)
Jack McFarland is everything you want your tight end to be. He can run, his routes are crisp, his hands are solid, and he blocks extraordinary well. McFarland hauled in six catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. The senior also had multiple pancake blocks in the Jags' 56-42 victory.
Higley 2022 RB Colton Allen (5-11, 190)
Colton Allen ran like a mad man on Friday night. The Senior RB rushed for over 100 yards in the game and put the Knights on the board, punching in a first quarter touchdown near the goal line. Allen was phenomenal in pass blocking as well. That's a pretty rare trait for a high school running back to have, and Allen is tremendous at it.
Higley 2023 WR Carter Hancock (5-11, 160)
Hancock absolutely shredded the Jags' secondary on Friday. The junior WR hauled in FOUR touchdown receptions, three coming in the 2nd Half alone. He's Mr. Reliable in the Knights' offense, and is matchup disaster for opposing strong safeties and nickel corners trying to cover him in the slot. He's easily one of the best Class of 2023 WRs that I've seen this season.
Who To Watch
Boulder Creek 2022 WR Ethan Caldwell (6-3, 187)
Caldwell used his 6'3 height to snag a couple passes over Knights' defensive backs, including one in the end zone for a touchdown right before the first half ended. A big red-zone target for the Jags' offense, Caldwell does a nice job of high-pointing the football on receptions. Caldwell finished the night with 3 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Quotable
"It all started with our OL tonight. The got pushes up front and that let us to lead the run game and we also had RPO's off of that. We just kept it rolling and it was all because of the OL." - Boulder Creek Senior TE Jack McFarland.
