Heading into the fourth quarter leading 28-21, the Saguaro Sabercats blanked the Cactus offense, outscoring the Cobra's 14-0 in the game's final quarter. Saguaro rolled to a 42-21 road victory, setting up a big-time match up versus the undefeated Hamilton Huskies in the Open Division Semifinals next week.
Impact Players
Saguaro 2023 QB Devon Dampier (6-0, 190)
In his first playoff start in a Sabercats jersey, Dampier was a human highlight reel accounting for four total touchdowns, including three on the ground. Dampier shined on both designed QB run plays as well as improvising while escaping the pocket on passing plays, usually making multiple defenders miss as he picked up massive yardage on the ground. Dampier's ability to keep plays alive with his feet gives this explosive Saguaro offense yet another dimension for teams in the Open Division to try and defend. Great night for the junior gun-slinger.
Saguaro 2022 DE Tristan Monday (6-4, 255)
Tristan Monday has given opposing quarterbacks headaches all season long, and last Friday was no different. The University of Wisconsin commit absolute dominated the line of scrimmage, creating havoc in the backfield consistently throughout the night. Monday's a technician, showing off his active and violent hands off the snap to get past offensive tackles in route to the QB. Monday came away with a big sack late in the fourth quarter.
Saguaro 2023 CB Cole Shivers (5-11, 170)
Shivers has proven yet again that he's one of the top cornerback prospects in the state for the 2023 class with his tremendous play in Friday's game. The junior cornerback showed off fluidity in his hips and man-to-man technique, locking down Cactus WRs in critical third down plays. Shivers also shined in run support by shedding blocks and coming up to make tackles near the line of scrimmage.
Cactus 2023 QB Will Galvin
"Will Galvan is no where near the biggest player when he walks on the field, but the heart and passion he plays with towers over even his biggest opponent. Galvan, on the offensive side of the ball, did everything he could to move the Cobras down the field, even after taking punishing blow after blow. Although Galvan only found the end zone one time, his impact goes beyond the box score. His ability to keep plays alive by moving out the pocket and giving his receivers time to try and get open was a big key to Cactus keeping the score as close as it was." - Jacob Seliga
Cactus 2022 LB Aki Pulu
"Pulu was one of the big playmakers for the Cobras on both sides of the ball. On offense Pulu was the main power running back and would require multiple Saguaro defenders to tackle him. Pulu did have a goal line touchdown in the first half, but in the second half, Pulu flew around on defense for the Cobras contributing on multiple tackles as well as forcing a big fumble early in the 3rd Q. Pulu was one of the athletes on the Cobras roster that could be considered as a heartbeat and his high motor on both sides of the ball showed why as he attempted to motivate his teammates with his play." - Jacob Seliga
Cactus 2023 RB Damian Jiles
"Jiles stats on the night won’t jump out right away but they don’t show his impact on the game. Jiles did have a second half touchdown but it was what he did before and after that score that showed his talent. Saguaro’s run defense was stuffing almost everything out of the backfield for the Cobras but Jiles would not stop going. He would fight for every yard he could and would show power by running between the tackles. Jiles also showed flashes of speed when he bounced outside. As a downhill runner, the force Jiles runs with is an ability that can not be taught but is made in the weight room in January, February, etc.. " - Jacob Seliga
One to Watch
Saguaro 2022 Free Safety Thomas DeChesaro (5-10, 182)
I've heard a lot about DeChesaro's play this season and was looking forward to finally being able to watch Saguaro's defensive captain live in-person. I was blown away by how fast DeChesaro's play recognition is. The senior does a fantastic job diagnosing run or pass from his deep safety position and he's phenomenal at coming downhill with speed to make tackles while filling the alley. This is a highly intelligent football player who can tackle, cover, make coverage switches pre-snap, and make plays sideline-to-sideline. DeChesaro is a coach's dream player and elevates the performances of everyone else around him.
