Impact Players
Highland's OL Unit
One of the top offensive line groups in the state, the powerful Hawks unit wore down Desert Edge's front 7 in the second half of this football game. The dominant OL group helped the Hawks rack up 175 yards on the ground and three 2nd Half rushing touchdowns. If this group stays healthy, they will once again help lead Highland to a deep postseason run.
Highland 2023Â Edge/OLB Gage Wilcock (6'2 210)
Wilcock was a monster on the defensive front for the Hawks on Friday night. Wilcock's high-motor was on full display as he'd consistently chase down opposing ball carriers coming from his back-side edge rusher position. Wilcock's made a living in Desert Edge's backfield, finishing with 7 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks in the Highland win.
Highland 2023Â Safety Joseph Allen (6'1, 215)
One of the hardest hitting safeties in the state made his presence felt on Friday night. The rangy 215-pound senior DB, dropped the hammer on a few opposing WR's that unfortunately made their way across the middle on crossing patterns, with Allen delivering bone-jarring hits on numerous occasions. Allen's a sure-tackler who does a great job of getting his head across the ball carrier and driving his feet through contact. Hopefully college coaches will have an opportunity to come down and watch him play during this Fall's eval period. This young man will make any college football program better.
Desert Edge 2023 RB Christopher Cordero (5'8, 180)
I was extremely impressed with Cordero's skillset Friday night and so was the Highland defense. The Highland Hawk players raved about Cordero in my postgame interviews after the game. They had the utmost respect for the senior Desert Edge RB. Cordero's toughness, patience, and vision were all traits that stood out. Cordero does a great job of letting his blocks develop and then bursts through the hole with great pad level and force. This young man brings it every down. The senior finished with 80 all-purpose yards and a touchdown against one of the state's best defenses.
Desert Edge 2025 QB Hezekiah Millender (6'3, 185)
This young man showed flashes of some serious dual-threat ability at the QB position on Friday night. Millender can do a variety of things well including standing tall in the pocket and delivering strikes and escaping the pocket with his elusiveness with an ability to make defenders miss. Millender will have plenty of time to grow, as he's only a sophomore, but I can see why so many people in the state rave about this young man. He has the athleticism, the arm, and the coaching to become really special.
Who to WatchÂ
Highland 2023 LB/RB Chance Cauthen (6'0, 210)
Highland seems to always have an absolute rock at MLB leading their defense. That pillar this year is Chance Cauthen. He's a sure-tackling machine for the Hawks and he does a great job of shedding off blocks and wrapping up ball-carriers. He's tough as nails too when he switches to offense and lines up in the backfield for Coach Farrel. Cauthen brings the thunder when he carries the rock. Cauthen finished with six tackles and a tackle for loss on defense and he also rushed for two touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball during Friday nights big win. Cauthen is definitely a player to watch this season.
