Well, I promised I'd talk about some of our guys this time. So, here we go. We have a nice team with solid depth at guards and inside. We have some height (6'8, 6'5, 6'5, 6'5, 6'4) and a lot of speed. We also have a good mixture of seniors and juniors. As long as we stay healthy, academically solid, and the chemistry continues to gel, we should see nice results.
Here are some of this year's Bruins:
Marcel Jones (Sr): Marcel is playing his fourth year of varsity ball, but only has about 1 year's worth of experience due to injuries. He is 6'8" and 300 lbs. He has really improved his overall physique and will be a real force in the paint and on the boards for us. Marcel got some decent attention from D1 schools this past summer, and has already garnered 2 or 3 offers for football. He has a real nice jump shot as well as being tough to defend in the lane.
Katrell Newton (Sr): Katrell is playing his third year on the varsity as a starter. He will play some guard and some forward. At 6'4", he has great inside/outside versatility and can rebound and defend at an exceptional level. He has received much juco interest and will probably make a verbal commitment in the near future.
Louis Barraza (Sr): Louis is also starting on varsity for the third consecutive year. He will play guard for us and can score from inside or outside. His length (6'5") frustrates opponents defensively and his work ethic and overall basketball IQ are through the roof.
Alondray Dale (Sr): Alondray (5'10") ran the point for us last year, but will move to the off-guard spot this year. (We start a 3-guard line-up) His quickness both on the break and defensively are the best on the team. He has a nice shot and is a good ball-handler. Alondray basically gives us a 2nd pg on the court.
Mario Denogean (Jr): Mario (6') will be our point guard and floor leader this year. He was the JV team's mvp last year. Mario is an exceptional leader with great confidence and a tremendous ability to get everyone the ball with a good opportunity to score. His pass-first mentality and great court vision/awareness belies the fact that he can score when needed with a good jump shot and good driving ability.
Stacy Williams (Sr): Stacy is one of the best leapers in the state. He runs the floor as well as any big man we've had at Trevor in a while and at 6'5" can finish with style. He has worked hard on his footwork and will be a valuable asset to us in the blocks as well as in transition.
Pedro Gonzales (Jr): Pedro (5'9") is our back-up pg and a solid 2-guard off the bench. He has a very strong upper body and can knock down the 3-point shot with regularity. Pedro does all the little things it takes to win at the 5A-I level and is a great kid to coach.
Edgar White (Jr): Edgar (6'5") is a solid inside player with a nice jump shot out to 18 feet. He is perhaps the strongest player on the team and will be working hard going head-to-head with Marcel all year in practice. He will be counted on for valuable minutes off the bench this year.
Demetrius Baugh (So): Demetrius (6'2") is a tremendous athlete who works really well without the ball. He has a nice jump shot and good leaping ability. "D" should see decent minutes this year coming off the bench. His game is a lot like Katrell's and we are looking forward to his play over the next 3 years.
Harold Gholson (Jr): Harold (5'8") is a quick, scrappy guard who can nail the 3 and play solid defense. His quickness in the press and ability to spell players at the pg position make him an important part of the team.
Tony Jackson (Sr): Tony is a guard that plays forward for us. This has been his m.o. for the past 4 years. He's an old-fashioned big-man in a guards body. At 6'2" he has guard size, but his rebounding ability and post-defense allows him to play inside for us.
Michael Cabral (So): Michael (6'1") is a shooter, pure and simple. He will improve other aspects of his game by practicing every day with the varsity. He may get some jv minutes, but he needs to get used to the speed of the varsity game. He has a good attitude and works hard to get the most out of practice.
Tim Lizarraga (Jr): Tim (6'1") is a positive attitude guy who works hard to make sure that the bench is giving their all during practice. Tim can play guard or forward and is a nice option against zone defenses. He doesn't make many mistakes and usually makes the most out of his time on the court.
Bardo Soto (Sr): Bardo (6'1")is another shooter, but unlike Michael, is used to the bigger, faster play at this level and can also mix it up inside. He played jv last year and hit many big late-game shots. He will be counted on to give us a lift off the bench this year.
Mookie Ambrose (So): Mookie is this year's jv point guard. He will also come up and play some varsity ball when needed. At 5'7" he's going to have to get used to finishing off plays in the lane at this level. Mookie has nice handles, and very good court vision. As with most sophomores, his shot is in transition and it will be nice to see him next year as a more polished player.
Well, that should be all 15. I guess it's a scouting report for our opponents, but it's nothing that most people don't know and that a good staff wouldn't find out from one tape or a few phone calls……By the way for those of you using this for scouting, we're all left-handed, play a spread offense, and the heights are all off by 3-6 inches……..This week we scrimmage against Chandler at their place on Thursday and then conclude the week with our annual Parent's Breakfast/Media Day on Saturday morning. Therefore, I should have something to write about next weekend. Until then, hope everyone has a nice week of scrimmaging and you all avoid the ankle sprains, twisted knees, jammed fingers, etc…that come with this game.
