Gridiron Arizona's 2025 Recruiting Update: 6/20

Southwest Minnesota State offers Perry DB Jayden Kimling

UPDATED: 6/20/24

Colleges across the nation continue to take notice of the prep talent in Arizona each season. More than 430 players from the Class of 2024 have signed with schools to advance their football careers, and receive an education.

Game times listed are in Arizona time.

May 30th marked the beginning of a Quiet Period. During this time it is permissible to make in-person recruiting visits only at the college campus. It is a time where official visits occur and one where schools host camps, where coaches can evaluate prospects. Recruiting contacts cannot be made in-person away from the college's campus. This period will last until June 23.

Perry safety Jayden Kimling received his third offer last Friday and it came from Southwest Minnesota State. He had 59 tackles, five pass deflections, and a pair of sacks for the Pumas last season as they went 8-4 and made the 6A quarterfinals. Over the weekend, the 6-3, 175-pound secondary player competed in a camp at the University of Idaho. Prior to that one, he attended camps at South Dakota State and Weber State this month. Southwest Minnesota State will play 10 of its 11 games this year against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (Div. II) teams. The Mustangs open at home on Sept. 7 against Minot State (N. Dak.). The game is billed as the 18th annual Ag Bowl, which celebrates agriculture in Minnesota and funds scholarships in those areas. SMSU finished 2-9 last season.

San Tan Charter recruit Uriah Neloms commits to Arizona State

UPDATED: 6/20/24

It's been a busy week or so for commitments as a total of 11 seniors have recently made their college decisions.

San Tan Charter wide receiver Uriah Neloms had a strong showing last week in the 7-on-7 tournament at Arizona State and was offered by the Sun Devils last Friday.

Just two days later, the 6-3, 195-pound player announced his commitment to ASU, becoming the second in-state pledge for this class.

"The relationship between the coaches and myself that was made in four days was a big factor," Neloms said in a text message.

Neloms caught 53 passes for 1,118 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. He also returned kickoffs for the Roadrunners, taking two back for TDs.

Arizona State has set its game themes for the coming year for its six home games. Gold will be the color fans are encouraged to wear for the opener on Aug. 31 against Wyoming (7:30 p.m. on FS1). The home finale on Nov. 23 against BYU will be the school's Homecoming. The Sun Devils went 3-9 in the last season of the Pac-12 and are now members of the Big 12.

Kansas has its sixth commitment from Arizona over the '24 and '25 classes, and second from the senior class, as Saguaro defensive end Garrett Martin made his commitment to the Jayhawks.

The 6-4, 240-pound edge rusher had four sacks in seven games played for the Sabercats last season. Martin made his announcement while on an official visit to Lawrence.

Martin received his offer from KU back in January a month after Saguaro won the 6A Conference championship. He was named to the First Team All-6A Northeast Valley Region despite missing a few games.

Kansas is coming off back-to-back bowl games for just the second time in program history. With renovations occurring with its home stadium, the Jayhawks will play games at Arrowhead Stadium and Children's Mercy Park (the home of Sporting Kansas City in the MLS). Kansas finished 9-4 after defeating UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Liberty offensive guard JR Hecklinski took part in a camp at New Mexico State, received an offer from the Aggies, and immediately committed last weekend.

The 6-2, 265-pound lineman likes what he sees in the NMSU program, starting with the coaches.

"I love my relationship with (Offensive Line) Coach (Andrew) Mitchell and (Head) Coach (Tony) Sanchez and their honesty," Hecklinski said in a text message. "And the relationship I built with the program."

New Mexico State has signed two players from Arizona in each of the past two years.

"I know they are making Arizona players a priority," Hecklinski said. "I look forward to helping recruit other top Arizona high school players to be Aggies! I really think we can build something great together at NMSU!"

The Aggies recorded double-digit wins for just the second time in program history in 2023. NMSU (10-5) played in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque in front of the bowl's largest crowd since 2010. NM State will begin the '24 season at home in Las Cruces on Aug. 31 against Southeast Missouri. The Aggies play in Conference USA (FBS).

One of Hecklinski's teammates on the Liberty team that won the Open Division title last season also made his commitment to a Division I school in the West last week. Defensive end Caden Branston will be playing his college football at Colorado State.

The 6-3, 270-pound lineman made his decision last Wednesday, selecting the Rams over Power Four programs Arizona State, Boston College, and Iowa State. Branston is the first commitment for CSU for the '25 class.

"The school was great," Branston said in a text message. "I loved the campus and how they are serious about academics. The coaching staff was amazing, especially (Defensive coordinator Freddie) Banks, (defensive line) Coach Chuka (Ndulue), and (Recruiting coordinator) Savage. But so were all of the assistants and player personnel. They really made me feel at home during my visit and (Head) Coach (Jay) Norvell was awesome and is bringing the program in a great direction. I feel like I will be able to get on the field there and make a difference."

For the first time in program history, Colorado State will have seven home games in 2024. However, the schedule for the Rams begins with a road game in Austin against Texas on Aug. 31. ESPN will have the national broadcast at 12:30 p.m. The first home game comes the following week for Ag Day against Northern Colorado. CSU, which plays in the Mountain West Conference (FBS) finished 5-7 last season.

Colorado State wasn't done with just one commit this month. On Wednesday, Horizon defensive tackle Jackson Murray made his commitment to the Rams.

Murray (6-1, 265) has a 77-inch wingspan. He was a First Team All-5A Conference selection for the Huskies after making 44 tackles and registering four sacks in his second year as a starter.

He committed a few days after making his official visit to Fort Collins over the weekend.

"Mostly, the coaches led me to want to commit there," Murray said in a text message. "Coach Banks, the DC there, believed in me that I could play at the FBS level. He didn't care about the height or the stats. He saw potential in me and that's what ultimately led to my decision."

Keeping it in the Mountain West, Nevada received a commitment last Thursday from Notre Dame linebacker Cody Wells. The 6-3, 210-pounder, who also plays lacrosse for the Saints, took his official visit to Reno in early June.

"I chose Nevada because of their coaching staff and culture they're building among their players," Wells said in a text message. "They have a completely new coaching staff led by (Head) Coach (Jeff) Choate, but they're all connected through different relationships in the past. I can also tell the true, genuine care that they have for their players, which I believe is very rare in the college football world today. Coach Choate has turned losing teams into championship contenders in the past (at Montana State), and I believe he can do it again at Nevada. Everyone in the locker room seems bought in to make it happen. Lastly, they believe in me so much as to move me around from inside backer to outside backer and play me all over the field where I can make plays."

Wells made plays at NDP last season with 81 tackles (7.5 tackles for a loss). He also played some tight end and caught three touchdown passes.

Nevada will start a week earlier than most of the country as the Wolf Pack host SMU on Aug. 24. The CBS Sports Network will have the broadcast at 5 p.m. CBS Sports Network will also be the place to find the Nevada home game on Nov. 2 against Colorado State (5 p.m.). The Wolf Pack are looking to rebound from a 2-10 season in 2023.

In late May, Dominic Mitchell competed in Kansas State's Elite Camp. His performance earned him an offer from the Wildcats. The Brophy safety made another visit to Manhattan for an official visit last weekend and on Wednesday, made his commitment to K-State.

The 6-1, 195-pound player had a very productive season in his second year as a starter for the Broncos. Mitchell made 72 tackles, had four sacks, intercepted two passes, and recovered a pair of fumbles.

After growing up in the Valley, Mitchell is looking forward to a different type of atmosphere for his college years.

"I loved the area and that it is an actual college town," Mitchell said in a text message. "The green landscape was a refreshing change from Arizona. The people were genuine and friendly, which made me feel welcomed. The impressive facilities and getting to spend more time with (Defensive coordinator Joe) Klanderman, (Head) Coach (Chris) Klieman and the entire Wildcat staff, what what sealed the deal for me. They were all easy to talk to and everything felt natural to me. They also showed me how I would fit into their defense and taught me a few things in a way which made me feel that they know how to develop their players."
Kansas State will kick its season off at home for the third year in a row as UT Martin visits the Wildcats on Aug. 31. K-State will play both Arizona schools as it hosts Arizona on Friday, Sept. 13 (in a non-conference matchup previously arranged) and will also entertain Arizona State on Nov. 16 (conference game). The Wildcats finished 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the Big 12 last season, ending with a victory over NC State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando.

Northern Arizona got its first three in-state commitments for new head coach Brian Wright . . . and they all gave their verbal word to the Lumberjacks on Wednesday.

Lucas Blumling, Aidan Browder, and Devin Murphy all plan to make the trip up to Flagstaff from the Valley for college.

Blumling is a 6-1, 210-pound linebacker at Desert Mountain. He had 54 tackles and a pair of sacks for the Wolves last season. Blumling has also played some tight end and slot receiver at DMHS and has 23 catches over the past two seasons (three touchdowns).

"The new coaching staff at NAU are all, first of all, genuine people," Blumling said in a text message. "And second of all, they're winners that have a great mindset. I want to be a part of what they are building up there. Everything about the school felt right, so I wanted to commit!"

Browder is a 6-1, 210-pound linebacker at Chandler. He had 68 tackles, two sacks, and a couple fumble recoveries for the Wolves. Also a track athlete, Browder has run an 11.27 in the 100-meters.

"I had an awesome visit up there and it was a great family atmosphere," Browder said in a text message. "I feel like the new coaching staff up there is building something special and I want to be a part of it."

Murphy is a 6-3, 195-pound safety at Maryvale. Last season, he intercepted four passes for the Panthers. Murphy also plays on offense and rushed for 661 yards and four TDs.

"I think the biggest thing for me is the fact that these coaches really believe in me," Murphy said in a text message. "You can always see how much a coach is passionate in players and with this amazing staff, I really just see myself fitting in and I definitely think these are the coaches that are going to push me the farthest."

Northern Arizona has named its four captains for the upcoming season and three of them have Arizona roots. Quarterback Angel Flores (Casa Grande) played in seven games last season and started the last three. He led the Lumberjacks with eight rushing touchdowns. Linebacker Tommy Ellis (Mountain Ridge) ranked second on the team with 64 tackles last year. He is also a three-time All-Big Sky Academic Team member. Defensive lineman Daniel Robledo (Cholla) started nine games for NAU last year. He racked up 23 tackles and had three sacks. The Lumberjacks (5-6 last season) open their season on Aug. 31 at home in the Skydome against Lincoln University (Calif.).

Finally, Salpointe offensive tackle Roman Fina committed to Duke University on Monday. The 6-4, 260-pound lineman went on an official visit to Durham on May 31.

Fina's older brother, Bruno, transferred to Duke from UCLA following last season. Roman and Bruno's father, John, was also an offensive lineman who played 11 years in the NFL with the Bills and Cardinals.

Duke currently has 20 commitments for the '25 class and six play on the offensive line.

Duke celebrates its Centennial in 2024. 100 years ago, Trinity College became Duke University. The Blue Devils will play eight teams that made bowl games last season, including Florida State (Oct. 18). Duke was in a bowl game as well. The Blue Devils finished with a mark of 8-5 (4-4 ACC) after winning the Birmingham Bowl.
