Local High School News
-Here are my Top 25 Games of Week 1
-Jason Jewell tweeted that one of the state's top returning defenders might be giving up football altogether, and it's something I've confirmed with the player's family. This is someone who had scholarship offers to play at the division 1 level, but decided to take another path forward. There's more to life than football, and I wish this man the best of luck.
-Tonight Valley Vista hosts Mesa Mountain View I'll be there, and it will be televised on Yur View (formerly Cox 7). I think that we can all agree that while "yur view" is a goofy name that will take some getting used to, it's nice to have continued televised high school football coverage. The best part of Yur View's coverage are the additional features they produce- here's one on Valley Vista's Dallas Pena.
-Cholla's offense scored 33 total touchdowns in their 1-9 2016 season. In their zero week win over Douglas, senior QB Jordan Porter helped produce EIGHT touchdowns (five passing, three rushing) on his own. Porter now has an amazing streak of three straight 400+ yard passing games. David Kelly of Tucson News Now checked in with Porter and Cholla ahead of this week's game.
I like reading team previews from the reporters closest to the action. Today I checked out the Mingus football preview from James Kelley of the Verde Independent, and the Bradshaw Mountain preview from Doug Cook of DCCourier. Give them a read!
Alumni News
Reggie Gilbert (Fairfax) making most of bid to crack Packers' 53-man roster (Sheboygan Press)
Bears' Ka'Deem Carey (Canyon del Oro) Out 6 Weeks After Surgery on Wrist Injury (Bleacher Report)
-Cactus High graduate Preston Guerra put on 24 pounds in his redshirt season at CSU-Pueblo, and had made the move from QB to TE. In his time starting at QB for Cactus, Guerra showed he's just fine as a ballcarrier, scoring 30 TDs on the ground to go along with his 56 career TD passes. His lone catch in high school also went for a score.
Guerra isn't the only former Arizona High School QB in a new position- former Chandler QB Mason Moran has officially been moved to safety for Oregon State.
-Check out this interview with Saguaro alum Jared Poplawski, now at Colorado
-I've been waiting on the junior colleges to post their rosters, since most have a game this weekend. I've heard that former Casa Grande QB Brock Hall, who had committed to Scottsdale CC, decided to move on from football- he was on the verge of a Wyoming offer before getting injured late in his senior season. That means that former Chaparral three year starter Grayson Barry is in competition for the job.
One school that does have their roster posted online is Pima Community College, and I was surprised to see former Salpointe star Kaelin DeBoskie among the players on the roster. DeBoskie announced his transfer from University of Arizona nearly 2.5 years ago, so I had assumed he might have moved on from football altogether, but it looks like he'll be giving it another shot.
Song of The Day
You can never go wrong with a classic. "Hey Ya" by Outkast is on rotation in my playlist today.
